What is Cancer?
The definition of cancer, according the American Cancer Society, is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Cancer starts when the growth of cells in the body is out of control and cells divide too quickly. It can also occur when cells forget how to die.
Cancer cells can travel through the blood and lymph vessels to organs throughout the body forming malignant tumors. The most common cancers in men are prostate cancer, lung cancer and colon cancer. In women, common cancers include breast cancer, colon cancer and lung cancer. In the United States, about half of all men and one-third of all women will develop cancer sometime during the life.
You can reduce your cancer risk by eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking or using tobacco, and reducing sun exposure. Cancer screenings may help catch cancer at its early stages when they are most treatable.
