Doula Program: Good for you...good for your baby

The Birth Place at Franciscan St. Anthony Health – Crown Point offers doula services free of charge to women using its childbirth facilities. A doula is a woman with experience in childbirth who provides continuous informational, physical and emotional support for a woman and her partner during labor. A doula does not perform clinical tasks.

DONA Birth Doula Workshops

Become a trained doula today! Doulas are trained in the ancient art of childbirth support. Early registration is encouraged. A 12-hour childbirth class and selected reading must be completed prior to taking this workshop.

Benefits of Doula Assistance
  • Doulas have proven to shorten labor, reduce use of forceps, vacuum, cesarean section and other obstetric intervention. Women with doulas are less likely to suffer from postpartum depression and are more satisfied with their labor and delivery experience.
  • A doula does not replace a woman’s partner, but instead makes him or her feel more comfortable during the birth. For women without partners, a doula may be the only source of focused, continuous emotional support throughout her labor.
  • Babies born with a doula’s help breastfeed better and are less frequently admitted to special care units.

Doulas are recognized and credited for improved physical outcomes and emotional well-being of mothers and infants.
