A diagnosis of cancer is overwhelming without the added burden of financial stress. Treatment must go beyond medical care and focus on the whole person, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Colonel Mark A. Smith dedicates his time and talents to raising money for a patient assistance fund that offers financial assistance to help eligible families with basic living expenses during active cancer treatment.

For patients and families impacted by cancer, there are not only emotional and physical concerns, but there is also an overwhelming – and often unexpected – financial burden.
Even with medical insurance, the cost of cancer care can deplete a family’s resources adding strain to an already stressful time. The Colonel Mark A. Smith Franciscan Cancer Center Patient Assistance Fund was created to lessen this impact on individuals and families. The fund offers financial assistance for everyday expenses not covered by insurance or other resources, such as medications, transportation, groceries, rent and utilities. By easing this burden, patients and their families can focus their attention on the important task of healing.
All administrative costs, personnel and supplies are supported by Franciscan Alliance, allowing 100 percent of funds donated to directly help patients in need.
Who is eligible?
The fund serves patients who are at least 18 years of age and actively receiving cancer treatment at Franciscan St. Francis Health. Active treatment includes chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery.
What does the fund cover?
The fund covers basic living expenses and cannot be used to make credit card payments or to prepay expenses.
Assistance may include:
- Groceries and nutritional supplements
- Transportation costs, such as gas or taxi services
- Medication assistance including co-pays and purchases not covered by insurance
- Lodging for patients and their families that must travel long distances for care
- Rent or mortgage payments
- Utility payments
How do I make a donation?
There are many ways to make a donation. The fund is administered by the Franciscan Alliance Foundation Central Indiana, an IRS 501 (c)(3) designated charitable organization, and 100 percent of donations are tax-deductible. Please call the foundation office at (317) 528-8949 for more information.

About Colonel Mark A. Smith
Colonel Mark A. Smith is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps Reserve and active officer with the Indiana State Police. A non-smoker, Colonel Smith was diagnosed with lung cancer in May 2012.
Along his cancer journey, Colonel Smith gained a new perspective and appreciation of his support system as well as his insurance and financial “safety net.” He learned of the financial burden faced by many cancer patients and the impact it has on their treatment.
To help address this issue, Colonel Smith partnered with the Franciscan Alliance Foundation St. Francis Health
to establish the Colonel Mark A. Smith Patient Assistance Fund. The fund provides financial assistance to cancer patients for everyday expenses not covered by insurance or other resources.
