Do I Need a Mammogram?

Mammograms are important for early breast cancer detection. It is also used to evaluate a woman who has symptoms of a breast disease and can help tell the difference between noncancerous and cancerous disease. Digital Mammography
Mammograms are one of the most effective tools to detect abnormalities early, when there is an increased chance of survival.  Typically used as a screening tool for healthy women, a mammogram uses x-ray to detect breast cancer.  It is recommended that women age 40 and over have a mammogram each year.  Franciscan St. Francis offers full-field digital mammography which provides highly detailed image quality and lower levels of radiation.

Breast Ultrasound
Breast ultrasounds use sound waves to create images of all areas of the breast.  Not screening tools for breast cancer, breast ultrasounds can be used to examine growths found by a mammogram or evaluate symptoms like pain or swelling.  Because no radiation is used, breast ultrasounds pose virtually no risk.

Breast MRI
For women with a high risk of breast cancer, a breast MRI is a powerful tool to capture images of the breast and find abnormalities that may not be detected by a mammogram or ultrasound.  A Breast MRI is noninvasive and is a complement to, rather than a replacement for, a mammogram.

Computer Aided Detection
Our highly trained radiologists used computer aided detection (CAD) to further evaluate digital images of the breast.  The CAD system specifically targets any abnormalities found on a mammogram and highlights the area for further physician review.
 
Stereotactic Biopsy
A radiologist may order a stereotactic biopsy if a small growth or calcification appears on a mammogram.  Using a local anesthesia, tissue and fluid are extracted from the abnormal area allowing future examination to determine whether cancer is present.

Being diagnosed with breast cancer can be very difficult, physically and emotionally.  Our team of medical professionals at Franciscan St. Francis Health is focused on the latest tests and procedures to help give peace of mind along with the highest quality care.
 
Our Breast Imaging Center is staffed with a board certified breast radiologist who performs ultrasound-guided biopsies and stereotactic procedures. We also have a Breast Health Nurse Navigator to assist you on every step of your journey.  Our navigator is specifically trained to provide support, education, and resources for patients and their families travelling through breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
