Benefits of a single massage therapy session

A study by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health, found that one session of massage caused a decrease in the stress hormone cortiol and an increase in white blood cells.

Swedish Massage
With Swedish massage, the commonly known type of massage therapy, therapists use a combination of five basic strokes to manipulate the body’s soft tissues. Benefits of Swedish massage include general relaxation, relief from muscular tension and pain and improved circulation.

Deep-tissue Massage
Deep-tissue massage is like Swedish massage but uses greater pressure and works on deeper muscle layers. Deep-tissue massage can be used to relieve chronic patterns of muscular tension by using slow strokes, direct pressure and friction.

Reflexology/Acupressure
Based on the principle that energy flows through the body along specific paths, reflexology/acupressure relieves tension and congestion along these paths. Reflexology focuses on applying pressure to areas on the feet, hands and ears. Energy moves freely along these paths when a person is healthy but can be blocked when tension or congestion is present. This blockage could cause pain in organs located along these specific paths.

Chair Massage
Chair massage takes advantage of techniques that provide fully clothed massages to clients who are seated in specially designed chairs. Therapists use a combination of Swedish and deep-tissue massage, commonly working the head, neck, shoulders and back.

Prenatal Massage
Pregnancy is a time of physical and emotional change. Consistent massage therapy during this time can relieve physical symptoms, reduce stress and help promote a positive mental attitude. Prenatal massage is tailored specifically to the needs of pregnant women and their changing bodies.
