The many small bones in our feet do an amazing amount of work as we stand, walk, jog or run. Sore feet and injuries of the foot and ankle are often the result of small changes in pressure and a lack of support to the bones, ligaments and muscles of the foot. One effective way to treat and prevent foot and ankle injuries is to wear custom foot orthotics in your shoes during weight-bearing activities.
If you suffer from one of the conditions below, you also may benefit from wearing custom orthotic inserts:
- Heel pain
- Chronic ankle sprains
Benefits of using orthotics
Using orthotics will bring the “ground up to your foot” while keeping your foot and ankle in a more suitable anatomic position. The devices generally carry a lifetime warranty, so they can be used as long as you need them.
How orthotics are made
To make the orthotics, a therapist will construct a plaster cast of the weight bearing surface of your feet while each foot is in an optimal biomechanical position. The cast is sent to a lab that will fabricate a custom orthotic insert according to specific instructions from your therapist. The inserts can be comfortably placed in your own shoes for daily activities.
