Living Miracles, Inspiring Health: Jerry’s Miracle

Just when you think you've made it through the tough times, life can come back with an unexpected twist of fate. Having been diagnosed with stage II lung cancer, Jerry Lytle, 48, had just completed surgery for the complete removal of his lung and had gone through four courses of chemotherapy. In complete remission, Jerry went home feeling he was on the road to recovery and life was good. Then he started experiencing extreme pain in his legs. It became increasingly difficult to walk, and even the simplest tasks such as grocery shopping became impossible.

He had a CT scan done at Franciscan Physicians Hospital, and it was determined that he had severe stenosis of the abdominal aorta and that both left and right iliac arteries were blocked. He required surgery to restore the blood flow to his legs, or else he would face the risk of amputation.

Unfortunately, the radiation therapy from his lung cancer had affected Jerry's heart, and he was told he would not be able to withstand surgery with anesthesia. Thankfully, Dr. Paul A. Jones, a board-certified interventional cardiologist at Franciscan Physicians Hospital in Munster, was able to perform the surgery in a noninvasive fashion. Jerry was placed in a twilight stage, and the five-hour surgery was performed safely. The blockage was opened successfully, reestablishing the blood flow. Much to his delight, Jerry regained complete use of both legs.

Jerry and his wife Linda will tell you that Jerry's ability to walk again without pain is a life-changing miracle. Between the lung cancer and the potential loss of his legs, there is not a day that goes by that Jerry does not give thanks for being alive.
