Pathology and Lab Testing in Munster

Pathology: “Behind the Scenes” Patient Care

The Franciscan Healthcare – Munster Department of Pathology delivers comprehensive, full-service clinical laboratory services for our patients and clinicians to assist in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases.

What is Pathology?

Think of pathology as “behind the scenes” care. Pathology is the study of disease through careful analysis of bodily fluids and tissue samples. While a patient makes routine face-to-face visits with a primary care physician, a pathologist is also there - intimately involved in the day-to-day care of patients – even if they only occasionally see one. That’s why a pathologist is sometimes referred to as a “physician’s physician.” A primary care physician may look to the pathologist for up to date information on the ever changing world of lab testing. In some cases, the pathologist may make the definitive diagnosis, such as in the case of a breast biopsy for cancer.

Types of Pathology

Anatomic pathology covers surgical pathology (examining biopsy tissue), cytopathology (examining cells, such as in a pap smear), and autopsies.

Clinical pathology is more associated with the laboratory. In addition to examining body fluids, clinical pathologists oversee the clinical pathology labs, consult with physicians, recommend medical tests and help interpret the results.

Pathology also has subspecialties, such as hematopathology, molecular pathology and transfusion. Most pathologists are board certified in clinical and anatomic pathology, and many are also fellowship trained in a subspecialty.
